In 1979, China designated March 12 as the National Tree Planting Day
Forest cover in Beijing has increased from 12.8% to 42.3% since a national tree planting campaign was launched in the early 1980s, according to municipal authorities.
The proportion of green land in the urban areas of Beijing rose from 20 per cent in 1980 to 48 per cent last year.
A total of 200 million young trees have been planted since the launch of the campaign, said Sunday the Office of the Reafforestation Committee in Beijing.
12,700 hectares of tree last year
Last year, Beijing planted trees on 12,700 hectares of land. This year, one million trees will be planted in the city by Chinese volunteers.
The tree planting campaign resulted in fewer sterile mountains, and authorities encouraged residents to sign up to look after the trees, according to the office.
